Casting Notes:

Marvel Spotlight aims to create compelling plays with teenage protagonists who tackle real-world problems in a diverse society. Licensees are encouraged to approach casting in a way that values equal representation and inclusion while promoting conversation and respect. For those characters marked as any gender, the costuming of the character should reflect the gender identity of the performer.

Every effort should be made so that KAMALA and AMMI, who are Pakistani American in this play and in the comics, are played by performers of color. For AMMI in particular, its important that she not become a caricature. If the actor and director are not familiar with a South Asian accent, the role should be performed without any attempt at an authentic accent; the important thing is for the mother/daughter relationship to come through clearly in performance.

All other roles are open to performers of any ethnicity. The director and cast are encouraged to read at least Ms. Marvel, Volume One: No Normal of the comics to gain a sense for how these characters appear on the page, which could be a starting point for thinking about casting.



MASI ASARE is a composer, lyricist, and playwright. She wrote the score for the secret agent musical Sympathy Jones (New York Musical Festival), published/licensed by Playscripts, with 40 productions to date internationally; book, music, and lyrics for The Family Resemblance (Theatre Royal Stratford East commission, developed Eugene ONeill Center), a semi-autobiographical musical about a mixed-race family in America; book, music, and lyrics for Rishvor, a new musical about racial passing commissioned by Barbara Whitman and Grove Entertainment; and lyrics for Monsoon Wedding, the Broadway-bound new adaptation of Mira Nair's film. Masi won the 2019 Stacey Mindich Go Write A Musical Lilly Award from the producer of Dear Evan Hansen. A past Dramatists Guild Fellow, she has also received the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award for a woman composer of musicals; both the Georgia Bogardus Holof Lyricist Award and the Paulette Haupt Composition Prize from the Eugene ONeill Center; and an Emerging Artist Grant from the Theater Hall of Fame, nominated by producer Daryl Roth. She holds degrees from Harvard and NYU Tisch School of the Arts and is an assistant professor in the Theatre department at Northwestern University.
