Beyond the Break

Beyond the Break by Challito Browne is a contemporary Australian one-person play that asks a deceptively simple question: Are you proud to be an Australian?

Shifting between poem and prose, the work explores racial identity, belonging, isolation and racism with warmth, bite, and emotional honesty. Our Orator stands in the dazzling light and confusing shadow of Australianness — a person of mixed race, straddling multiple worlds, whilst being truly included in none. Beginning as a monologue written to his Jidoo (grandfather), Beyond the Break moves through memory, humour, grief and hard-won clarity. Past and present collide as the Orator searches for language that can hold family, culture, and the ache of being told you don’t belong — and still insists on love, connection, and the possibility of empathy.
